LISA + TOBY // A MILES RIVER WEDDING

    May 8th, 2012

We’d been watching the weather forecast for a few days before Lisa and Toby’s wedding and were preparing for a full day of April rainshowers. But what would you know, the rain held off until after the ceremony, when guests were safely inside the tent enjoying cocktails. Someone mentioned in their toast that night that Lisa’s parents, who were watching from above, would never have let it rain on their daughter’s wedding. And after getting to know this genuine, warm bride and groom, it makes perfect sense to me that the weather would be so kind to accommodate them.

It was a day filled with beautiful details, lots of Lisa and Toby’s friends and family, and a great, rip-roaring celebration, complete with spur-of-the-moment guest performances (and rapping) on stage with the band. I think I’ll let the images tell you rest…

Lisa and Toby’s invitation suite perfectly incorporated local imagery and sketches of the vintage lanterns decorating the ceremony and reception venues later on.

With the help of the amazing Allison at Pineapple Productions, Lisa and Toby dreamed up the most adorable ‘welcome bag’ for their guests, complete with sweets and a bay-themed itinerary.

    Fancy Twix cookies… Yum!

Sparkly shoes, earrings, and a beaded clutch completed Lisa’s wedding day look.

The flowers were subtly perfect for the day and the setting. The lace bouquet wraps added that little something extra.

Toby was all smiles, all day long.

Just before leaving for the ceremony, Lisa wrapped a family heirloom lace handkerchief around her bouquet.

Lisa’s brother and sister were a huge part of her wedding day, helping her get ready and walking with her down the aisle, or actually the dock, at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

Lavender lemonade brightened the day and greeted guests as they arrived.

Great hats, ladies! Usher, on assignment.

The Miles River, boats, and paddling ducks served as the background for the ceremony.

Could these be most beautiful flower girl and boy ever?

Afterwards, we moved to great spot for some waterside portraits.

While we were shooting portraits, we caught the ushers having some fun.

In the meantime, guests enjoyed appetizers, cocktails, and a raw oyster bar.

This shadowbox filled with sand and pretty green sea glass served as the perfect vessel for the escort cards.

Lisa and Toby used recreated great vintage postcards for notes and bits of advice as part of their guestbook. So cool!

The theme continued on into the table numbers, where each card was unique. Table number ten’s card showed the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum grounds, where the wedding was taking place.

The card at table number three included a vintage photo of the Ferry Tred Avon that still runs from St. Michael’s/Bellevue to nearby Oxford (where I grew up!).

As always, the food by Gourmet by the Bay, was stunning and smelled delicious.

The crowd loved Lisa’s expression during her and Toby’s first dance.

The dark, shifting rainclouds gave me a great backdrop to shoot the well-lit tent against the sky.

Inside the tent, the dance floor was hopping.

Last dance of the night…there was so much love in the room for the new Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd!

Many thanks to all of the amazing vendors that helped put on Lisa and Toby’s wedding…

    PORTRAITS // CRISTINA

    May 4th, 2012

Cristina and I met when we were in high school, or maybe it was in our middle school days, hanging out with friends on the Eastern Shore in the sweltering Maryland summertime. I was really happy to reconnect with her in the last couple of years, since we’re both back in the DC area and working in the wedding industry. Cristina works with Gourmet by the Bay, helping clients put together amazing wedding and event meals as well as doing some gorgeous styling and planning.

When Cristina got in touch with me about shooting a few portraits together, I was excited. She’s got a great eye for putting together elegant events and an equally strong sense of personal style. In her email, she explained that she was looking for images that she could use professionally and for fun that reflected her personality. I’ve always admired Cristina’s ability to pull off almost any color with her strawberry blonde hair and I couldn’t help but smile when I saw that she’d picked great bright colors for our shoot. We hadn’t gotten to catch up face-to-face in a long time, so we met up at the National Portrait Gallery in DC to chat, to get comfortable in front of the camera, and then headed down to a nice stretch of nearby waterfront to catch the soft sunset light. Here a couple of my favorites from our waterfront shoot…

I love the way she combined colors and textures for our shoot. Perfect!

The girl’s got a great, effortless, summery style.

    Did I mention she’s beautiful?

I feel lucky to have Cristina as a friend and as a colleague and can’t wait to see all of the great things she’ll do in the future!

YOUTH SAILING AT CISA CLINIC 2012

    April 23rd, 2012

The last couple of years I’ve had a great time getting to know some of the 100+ most promising youth sailors in the country at California International Sailing Association (CISA)’s Advanced Racing Clinic (CISA Clinic) in Long Beach, California. I was excited to go back again this year. Over four intense days, sailors 18 and younger who had been selected to participate in the clinic pushed themselves physically and mentally through bootcamp-style fitness training, classroom and on-the-water coaching and drills, inspiring evening speakers, and close racing in the championship on the final day. As clinic director (and my hubby) Andrew Campbell described in his article last week, learning and improving yourself and your teammates at such a high-level clinic is a huge accomplishment for any young sailor. I’m really proud of all of the sailors I got to know. Here’s a little look into the CISA Clinic…

The sailors are in blue and the coaches are in gray. The awesome clinic gear is always a big hit!

These boys (below), who’ll be representing the USA at the Youth World Championship in Dublin in July, are prepping for the next race to start at CISA.

Intensive coaching is a huge part of the CISA Clinic. Charlie Buckingham, a world-class Laser sailor and Olympic hopeful for 2016 (below left), spent most days racing and tuning against the rest of the fleet and switched to the motorboat for the race day. So cool!

This guy’s psyched to go racing.

There are lots of sea lions in Long Beach, lazily observing the scene.

Close racing at CISA gives sailors an opportunity to measure up against some of the best in the country and improve their tactical thinking.

The CISA Clinic brings in some of the best sailors from all over the country (including some from Maryland, seen below), so California’s top sailors can learn new things and compete even more successfully on a national level.

Lots of questions, lots of coaches to answer them.

This sailor’s unclipped from his harness, but he’s still hiking out, standing by for a gybe.

Below are the winners of the 2012 CISA Advanced Racing Clinic Championship (minus a few who had to head straight to the airport). Congrats to you all!

This first year I was involved in CISA, I created a fun little multimedia piece about the event.

    Check it out here: http://vimeo.com/11452392.

MY NEW SAMPLE ALBUM IS HERE!

    April 18th, 2012

This year I decided to start working with the amazing Indigo Album Design for wedding album printing and production and a great move it was. I love their selection of cover treatment options, book sizes, END PAPER options (!), excellent print quality, and their helpful customer service.

I thought about this switch in two ways. Having been a bride recently myself, I felt that if I’m going to be spending some serious dough on an album, it’d better be top-notch and fit my wedding’s style. As a photographer and album designer, I wanted a final product that reflected the quality and personality of my brand. I think my new albums do all of those things. So, without further ado, take a look at Lucye and Bernardino’s all white and green classic Italian wedding in album format…

My albums are 12 inches by 12 inches, so images printed large and small look amazing, yet the album’s still easy to handle.

The album pages lie flat, which means you can see each page fully from edge to edge. This also makes the album more pleasant to flip through, so you don’t have to prop pages open to keep them there.

This blue-greenish floral is one of my favorite end paper options. It has a bit of texture to it, which adds a little something. I just got the complete Indigo swatch book in the mail and the variety of awesome end paper options means there’s one to suit any couple’s style and wedding.

For my sample album cover treatment, I chose a book cloth material, but the leather options are soft and beautiful as well.

My albums include a cover inset photo, which I think is a great way to introduce the viewer to the wedding in one quick glance.

The image layouts (which I design and then send off to the printer and binder) are flush-mounted, meaning that they are printed directly onto the thick pages of the book.

I could eat that pumpkin scampi risotto right off of the page!

My albums also come with a keepsake bag in this lovely green and white (or black and white) pattern, keeping your album safe and clean when it’s not on display.

    The End.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek at the albums I’m now offering. There’s nothing quite like seeing your own wedding beautifully bound up in book format!
